It’s been an encouraging debut for Brodie Davis since stepping into Junior Formula 500s earlier this season, with the third-generation racer having gained some invaluable experience in the growing class, thanks to a great opportunity from a fellow driver.

Predominantly contesting race meetings throughout North Queensland at tracks such as Cairns International Speedway and Rockhampton’s Rocky Speedway, an area in which Junior Formula 500s is still very much an emerging class, Davis’s debut season has been an exciting one, with his and his dad Scotty’s involvement in each race meeting ultimately helping the class to progress.

A worthwhile opportunity was offered to Davis, when fellow Junior Formula 500s racer Bodie Smith broke his leg in an off-track incident, with Bodie and his dad, Brett, inviting Davis to pilot their Qld # 77 Smith Bros Racing supported Stallard chassis, powered by a Jettco Developments Yamaha R6 engine, for two race meetings at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway – one of the state’s premier speedway tracks.

Making the most of this chance to race against a new group of competitors on unfamiliar territory, Davis excelled during his first outing, being the highest point scorer and finishing third in the feature race. Backing up this form last Saturday night, Davis was once again the highest point scorer, but this time managed to go two better, taking out his maiden victory.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity the Smith family gave me to race their car in Brisbane,” said the competitive 14-year-old Cairns-based racer, who has also received a lot of help from senior Formula 500s driver and family friend Ryan Skennar.

“Bodie and Brett made it so easy for us to travel to Brisbane and race and doing so allowed me to pick up a lot of knowledge and experience, as well as added confidence. We can’t thank them, as well as Ryan (Skennar), enough for their help.”

It was no wonder that Davis would eventually make his way into the speedway racing circuit, having been brought up with a rich history in the sport, with his dad, Scotty, and his mum, Heidi Jonsson, both having raced Sprintcars throughout the 1990s. Scotty’s dad, Geoff, also predominantly raced Sprintcars, after also racing in the TQ’s class, with Heidi’s dad, Graham, racing Sprintcars along with dabbling in touring cars at the Bathurst 1000.

Further cementing the Davis and Jonsson family speedway tradition, Davis’s uncles Neil and Clint Jonsson also previously raced Sprintcars, while his Uncle Darren Mollenoyux is currently enjoying a successful career in the class, with his wife, Deanne Mollenoyux, previously racing Formula 500s.

Commencing his own competitive racing career at the age of six, racing go karts on the tar circuits, Davis eventually decided to step into speedway, joining the Junior Sedans class. Later moving into Junior Formula 500s, a class which acts as a stepping stone for kids and allows them to learn their race craft before moving on to senior classes, Davis has received a lot of help from his senior counterparts, along with his proud parents.

Having contested around seven shows in his Davis family-owned Kawasaki powered FNQ # 39 Swift, Davis is currently juggling his time between speedway and go karts, where he still competes in the KA3 Senior Light class.

Learning as much as he can with the Junior Formula 500s class, Davis hopes to one day follow in his family’s tyre tracks by stepping into 410 Sprintcars.

For Davis‘s next outing, he will be contesting the second round of the North Queensland Titles at the Townsville Kart Club over the Saturday and Sunday of May 13-14.

Davis would like to thank the following 2016-17 season sponsors for their valued support: Davis Transport, Norsafe Test & Tag, Jettco Developments, DC Mechanical Repairs, Kart City and Ryan Skennar Racing. He would also like to give special thanks to his mum and dad (Heidi and Scotty), Ryan Skennar, and Brett and Bodie Smith.
