COMPACT SPEEDCARS

On Saturday night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Darren Vine came away with the best possible result when he managed to withstand pressure from his rivals to win his record eighth Australian Compact Speedcar Title.

Having made his way up to third on the opening lap of the Australian Title deciding feature race after starting from position four, Vine managed to take control in the early stages, by outpacing Wayne Corbett and Robbie Stewart to take the lead on lap five.

Once out in front, the now eight-time Australian Champion was never headed, with a number of stoppages giving him clear traffic, going on to score his fifth consecutive Australian Title win and only the second in his Aus # 1 turbo-powered machine by a comfortable margin.

“I couldn’t be happier to come away with my eighth Australian Title win, particularly against such a competitive field,” expressed Vine, who admits to feeling a lot of pressure heading into the event due to the level of driver talent in the field, having set such a large focus on Compact Speedcars this season.

“The car felt great and its setup came on earlier than expected in the feature race, which allowed me to get the front fairly quickly. From there, it was all about making sure I hit the mark on each of the restarts.

“None of this successful would be possible without the amazing support of my family, my team and my sponsors, so I have to say a huge thank you to them.”

By virtue of a win, a second and a third-place finish in his heat races on the opening night of competition, as well as scoring the fastest time in time trials with a 14.753 lap, Vine was fourth in points heading into night two.

Finishing second in his final heat race on Saturday night, Vine lined up fourth for the 30-lap feature race and having set the car up loose, he managed to utilise the moisture on the bottom of the track to make his way into the lead, where he set the pace, impressively scoring his eighth Australian Title.

The title is the ninth for the Vine family, with Darren’s sister Julie having won the 1996 Australian Compact Speedcar Title at Wagga International Speedway (NSW).

Following this wonderful achievement, Vine will now shift his focus to the Australian Speedcar Title which is set to take place at Archerfield Speedway on the Friday and Saturday nights of February 3 and 4.

Vine would like to thank the following 2016-17 season sponsors for their support: Mike Vine Turbos, Men at Work Exhausts, and Mobile Injector Services.
