In an effort to gain as much track time as possible ahead of the 2017-18 season back in Australia, DJ Raw is preparing to travel to America, where he will make his Midget debut, undergoing a number of practice sessions and race meetings.

Back in 2010, Raw competed in California and Missouri racing Lightning Sprints. Fast forward seven years, and he’s set to return overseas, this time racing in the Midget class.

Set to touch down in Indianapolis on June 28, Raw will then embark on a three-week long schedule, consisting of a minimum of seven race meetings and three practice sessions at a number of tracks throughout Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri, where he will be hoping to get as many laps under his belt as possible in order to build on his experience.

DJ's brother Adam developed a great friendship crewing for leading American racer Davey Ray some ten years ago, and has arranged DJ to be running his own Esslinger engine in the experienced racer’s Team RayPro # 33 AU Spike chassis, which is sponsored by Pickles Auctions.

Ray, a three-time Australian Midget Champion will also race alongside Raw in his Team RayPro # 33 Mopar powered Spike. Raw certainly hopes to assist Ray in the coming months to see him back racing down under against the best local and overseas talent.

The decision to travel to America was made in order to give Raw and his Sydney-based family run team the best preparation for the 2017-18 season, which will see him launch his first full season in Midgets, contesting a full schedule on Australia’s East Coast. Following his American campaign, he will then transport his engine back to Australia, where he will run it for the duration of the season.

Three-time World Series Sprintcars winning chassis fabricator Jeff Jackson, which is Raw's cousin, is looking forward to building a brand-new Jackson Midget chassis for Raw. In order to give him the best possible chance of being consistently competitive throughout his debut season, Jeff and his younger brother David Jackson, who is well renowned as one of the best Midget crew chiefs in Australia, will be on hand every step of the way.

“Our trip to America will be made up of a mixture of racing and practice, with the purpose being to get as much track time and experience as possible prior to next season,” said Raw, who is certainly giving himself a challenge, with the POWRi and USAC Series being two of the largest sanctioning bodies for Midgets in the United States of America.

“I’m looking forward to contesting our first full season in Midgets in the 2017-18 season, and I’m hoping that my past experience in Sprintcars and Lightning Sprints will help me adapt to the new car as quickly as possible.

“I have to say a huge thank you to my valued sponsor Pickles Auctions, who have helped to make this trip to America a possibility and who continue to provide me with such amazing support.”

The cousin of Sprintcar great Skip Jackson, Raw is no stranger to competitive speedway racing, having commenced his speedway racing career in Speedway Karts, before making the move into Lightning Sprints, where he won numerous blue-ribbon events aboard the family-owned car and also Lismore-based car owner Glen Eyears.

Stepping into 410 Sprintcars in the 2015-16 season, Raw has raced a number of different classes and will be hoping to draw on his previous racing experience in order to familiarise himself with Midgets and make a competitive start to his debut season.
