SPEEDCARS

It’s been a solid 2016-17 season for Darren Vine, which got even better at last Saturday night’s annual awards banquet, when he was crowned this season’s Queensland Speedcar Racing Association Club Champion.

After making several improvements to his car and engine package at the beginning of the season, Vine consistently showed strong pace at each race meeting, particularly throughout qualifying, which allowed him to carry his competitive form into the feature races.

Collecting two feature-race wins in Speedcars in the 2016-17 season, Vine’s highlight of the season came in May, when he outlasted his rivals in the 50 Lapper at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, impressively becoming the first ever Queensland-based driver to claim victory in the nine-year running of the event, along with finishing fourth overall in the Polar Ice Midget Series and fifth in the Queensland Title.

Running double duties earlier in the season, Vine also experienced significant success in Compact Speedcars, taking top honours in both classes at Archerfield Speedway in September, before going on to win his eighth Australian Compact Speedcar Title on home soil. Of the eight race meetings he completed in Compact Speedcars, Vine came away with a remarkable five victories.

“The performance of the car and engine this season is an absolute testament to the constant hard work put in by the entire team,” said the pilot of the Qld # 6 Mike Vine Turbo supported Esslinger powered Spike chassis, owned by his brother-in-law Paul McMannim.

“We’ve been really consistent in both Speedcars and Compacts, which is something we’ll hopefully continue next season. I have to give full credit to Paul for allowing me to run his car, along with all of my sponsors for all of their support throughout the season.”

The upcoming 2017-18 season will see Vine contest a number of Compact Speedcar shows, along with the full Queensland schedule for Speedcars. The team will also travel to Murray Bridge Speedway in South Australia for the Australian Speedcar Title, as well as travelling to Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway to compete in selected shows.

Vine would like to thank the following 2016-17 season sponsors for their support: Mike Vine Turbos, Men at Work Exhausts, Mobile Injector Services, and Craig Thompson Machining. Special thanks go to Paul McMannim.
