V8 DIRT MODIFIEDS

For Steve Milthorpe, winning last Saturday night’s Queensland V8 Dirt Modified Title at Maryborough Speedway was a new highlight in his 20 years of competing in the class.

The Rutherglen, Victoria-based racer was the form driver heading into the Queensland Title-deciding feature race and was able to carry on that form by leading just about every lap of the 30-lap distance.

Milthorpe had a tight tussle with Queenslander David Clark from the drop of the green flag in the feature race, but he was able to get ahead of Clark by the completion of the opening lap. Despite heavy lapped traffic throughout the feature race, Milthorpe managed to use that to his advantage as a shield from the chasing competitors and went on to take out what was an untroubled win.

Winning the Queensland Title in such comprehensive fashion up against such tough competition, including current Australian Champion Kevin Britten, was without a shadow of a doubt his new career highlight.

“A few years ago I broke through for my maiden Victorian Title, which was really special for myself and the team, but winning the Queensland Title now takes it to a whole new level,” Milthorpe said.

“The Queensland Title had the country’s best drivers competing and there were no easy qualifying heat races and the feature race was exactly the same, so to beat them all fair and square is very satisfying and a great thrill.”

Milthorpe continued on by saying that one of the keys to his Queensland Title win was the ongoing support of his crew chief Clinton Moore.

“I can’t thank Clinton (Moore) enough for all that he does with the car and it’s mainly just him and me at the race meetings, along with the support of my family and friends,” expressed the Vic # 9 Hi-Tec Oils / North-East Oil Distribution supported Troyer driver.

“In recent seasons we’ve really stepped it up to another level, which is a lot to do with our switch to the Troyer car. However, it’s no good having a great car if you don’t know what to do with it, so that’s where Clinton and I work well together with the car’s setup and our results are starting to show for it.”

Leading into the Queensland Title, the previous weekend saw Milthorpe perform strongly at the Australian Title at Rockhampton Speedway in Queensland. He had qualified fourth for the feature race and went on to greet the chequered flag in seventh.

Apart from the Queensland and Victorian Title wins, Milthorpe’s other career highlights include winning the inaugural Summer Slam Series back in the 2005-06 season and then coming home in second the following season.

Milthorpe is now looking forward to this Saturday night’s NSW Title at Lismore Speedway and is confident of another front-running result. Doubling up as the final 5 Star Dirt Series round, he heads into this event currently sitting third in the overall point standings.

For the 2016-17 season, Milthorpe is proudly sponsored by: Hi-Tec Oils, North-East Oil Distributions, Maverick Boats, Twin City Truck Centre, Complete Body Craft, Potts & Schnelle Accountants, Joe Hansen Insurance and Truck Art Wagga. Special thanks must go to Clinton (crew chief) and Greg (dad).
