WINGLESS SPRINTS

Off the back of a consistent performance throughout both nights of competition, Troy Carey achieved a major milestone last Saturday night, taking out the NT Wingless Sprint Championship at Darwin’s Northline Speedway to claim his maiden state title crown.

Having joined Wingless Sprints three seasons ago, Carey has continued to go from strength to strength in the class, with his second trip to Australia’s Top End in as many seasons delivering him with his best result yet.

Heading into the NT Championship, after placing second in the Malidook Challenge the weekend prior, Carey was in strong form from the outset, winning a heat race before driving to a runner-up finish in the preliminary feature race.

Carrying this confidence into the final night of competition on the Saturday night, Carey once again showed promising pace, qualifying on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap NT Championship-deciding feature race alongside pole-sitter Sam Borlini.

While Borlini managed to get the jump on Carey off the starting line, Carey was quick to retaliate, launching an attack on the leader and managing to pull off an outside pass to take control of the lead by the completion of the opening lap, a position he retained through to the fall of the chequered flag.

“I couldn’t be happier to have been able to achieve what is a huge career highlight for me in winning my first state title in the Wingless Sprint class,” expressed Carey, whose previous best result in the class was winning the 50 Lapper at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in the 2015-16 season, along with a third-place finish in the same season’s Queensland Title at Maryborough Speedway.

“It’s a huge effort to make it up to Darwin from NSW, and this result has certainly made it all worthwhile.

“A big thank you must go to the local speedway community for all of their amazing hospitality. They put a lot into the last few weeks to make each event a successful one and they did a fantastic job.”

For his final meeting at Northline Speedway, Carey will be back in action this Saturday night to contest the Freo Cranes Twin Feature Night, which consists of the Des J Nash Outlaw Challenge and the Hugh Britton Memorial.

Carey would like to thank the following sponsors for their continued support: Repco - Dubbo, Supreme Heat Firewood Supplies, and Tullamore Hotel. He would also like to give special thanks to his partner Anna, along with the rest of the family.
