HISTORICS

As one season ends and a new one looms large, it is easy to lose sight of how speedway racing evolves through the development and implementation of new ideas and technologies and the emergence of new competitors as the stars of today and the future. Therefore, it is very important that we take the time to celebrate the history of our sport by remembering the great cars and drivers that have graced Australian speedway tracks for more than 50 years.

Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway celebrates the days of yesteryear with a Nostalgia Speedway Day this Saturday that will feature displays and on-track demonstrations from vehicles campaigned by the some of the very best drivers from Australia and abroad.

There are more than 50 vintage, classic and historic cars nominated thus far, including cars raced by the likes of Bob Blacklaw, Bob Tunks, Max Dumesny, Skip Jackson and American legends such as Mel Kenyon, Jimmy Sills, Rich Vogler, Gary Bettenhausen, Danny Smith, Bobby Allen, John Andretti and Ken Schrader. From Cageless Midgets to 1990’s era Sprintcars, the cars taking part will represent the vast array of speedway machinery that have

Cars from as far back as 1958 have entered, with myriad styles and designs represented in the field. In addition to the Sprintcars and Midgets, there will also be Compact Speedcars, Litre Sprintcars, V8 Dirt Modifieds and other categories in action. Even more diverse is the engine configurations amongst the field, from Holden, Ford and Chevrolet to the likes of Volkswagen, Pontiac, Nissan, Suzuki, Mitsubishi and others. These cars certainly offer considerable insight into the changing technologies and trends that have emerged in each era of competition and this Saturday will present a rare opportunity to see so many iconic vehicles in the one location, many of which will be hitting the track for a series of spirited demonstrations throughout the afternoon.

Gates open at 11am and there will be static displays to enable closer inspection and appreciation of these cars, with on-track demonstrations getting underway from 3pm.
