Nathan Camilleri couldn’t have been happier to visit the podium in last Saturday night’s Australian Legend Cars Title at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, coming home in third place, after a last-lap charge.

The impressive result was a new career highlight for the Rooty Hill, NSW-based racer, who has just completed his second season with the class, after being named Rookie of the Year in his debut season, as well as coming away with a couple of runner-up finishes.

Having contested all 12 shows at Valvoline Raceway, Nathan had plenty of experience at the track heading into the Australian Title, which he utilised from the outset, qualifying third for the 30-lap feature race, by virtue of a win and two second-place finishes in his heat races.

It was a challenging Australian Title-deciding feature race for Nathan, who maintained his position for the first nine laps, before making a driver error, which saw him slip back to sixth. Managing to recover from his earlier slip up, Nathan worked his way forward into podium contention, becoming involved in a thrilling battle with Glenn Mitchell, which culminated with a drag race to the chequered flag, with Nathan edging out his rival by the narrowest of margins.

“We knew the Australian Championship was going to be tough and we’d been hoping to qualify towards the front of the field, but after my mistake in the middle stages of the feature race, we are absolutely stoked to have been able to recover to make it on to the podium,” expressed 21-year-old Nathan, who decided to join Legend Cars due to the affordability of the class and the regular racing close to home, after spending eight seasons in Speedway Karts, which were highlighted by winning a NSW Kart Club Championship, as well as a NSW Title, and which he credits for giving him his race craft.

“I was sitting in fourth on the last lap and knew I had to give it everything, so I tried a move on Glenn (Mitchell) around the outside and managed to pull it off to finish third, which was quite an honour in the inaugural Australian Title.

“My family plays a huge part in each race meeting and I have to thank them for all of their continued support. This result was definitely a whole family effort.”

This season, Nathan was joined in Legend Cars by his younger brother Liam (17), who has used his debut season as an opportunity to build on his confidence and progressively become more competitive.

Qualifying 21st for Saturday night’s Australian Title-deciding feature race via finishing third in B main 1, after a seventh, fourth and eighth-place finish in his heat races, Liam certainly made the most of his maiden Australian Title campaign.

Immediately launching himself forward six places into 15th in the opening laps, Liam then battled with his rivals for position, before once again making up some quick spots with 13 laps to go and moving into 12th. Continuing his strong showing, the determined racer was able to make his was up to position 10 with five laps remaining; a position he held on to through to the chequered flag.

“I was really happy to have been able to crack into the Australian Title top 10 in my debut season,” said Liam, whose best results in Speedway Karts include winning an Australian Junior Light Title and a NSW Title, as well as receiving the Best Presented Car award for NSW Kart Club.

“I made the decision to join Legend Cars after seeing how much Nathan was enjoying it and I’m really glad I did. It’s a great class and it’s awesome to be able to race against my older brother.”

Nathan and Liam would like to thank the following 2016-17 season sponsors for their valued support: The Cladding Factory, Killer Image, Western District Tyre Centre and C Drive Fitness. They would also like to give special thanks to their mum and dad (Kerrie and James), along with Peter, James, Jason, Joel, Tiffany and Mark.
