MODLITES

Whyalla’s Westline Speedway in South Australia is set to welcome some of the country’s best Modlite drivers when it hosts the Australian Title over the Australia Day long weekend (January 26-28).

With practice and the Calcutta on Australia Day (Thursday night, January 26), the Australian Title will be contested over two nights of racing on Friday and Saturday nights and with over 30 cars nominated, this event is sure to be hotly contested.

Current Australian and Queensland Champion Terry Leerentveld will travel almost 2,000 kilometres from his hometown of Dalby in Queensland to head the line-up at the Whyalla venue and will be focused on putting up a solid defence in order to retain top honours.

Having already driven to multiple feature-race wins in the 2016-17 season, repeating his seemingly unbeatable form in recent seasons, Leerentveld will be difficult to overthrow; however, with a number of talented drivers from throughout the host state of South Australia, along with Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia, his task is certainly not going to be an easy one.

Adding an international flavour to the event will be American racer Jeff Teeters, who will tackle the track in his USA # 1 Leader machine. The Ohio-based racer will be looking to prove his worth when he goes up against his native rivals on unfamiliar territory.

“We’re really looking forward to hosting the Australian Title for Modlites – it’s the first Australian Title we’ve held since 1998 when the V8 Dirt Modified Australian Title was held here,” commented Westline Speedway secretary Michael Brown.

“This is the first major event for Modlites that’s been held in South Australia, so we’re glad to be helping put the class on the map throughout the state. The class has a big following here in Whyalla and hosting an Australian Title here will hopefully continue to grow that following.”

Westline Speedway

One week prior to the Australian Title event, Westline Speedway is set to host the South Australian Title this Saturday night (January 21), which will give the drivers and teams the opportunity to fine-tune their machines for the Australian Title.
