MODLITES

The Australian Modlite Title, which is set to be held at Whyalla’s Westline Speedway this Australia Day Long Weekend, boasts a stout field of drivers among the line-up.

Held over two nights of racing this Friday and Saturday nights, following practice, scrutineering and the Calcutta on Australia Day (Thursday), a field of 30 drivers from throughout Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, the host state of South Australia and the United States of America, will battle it out for the chance to achieve top honours and take home the Australian Title crown.

Terry Leerentveld will be the strong favourite heading into the event, with the current Australian and Queensland Champion having so far this season raced to multiple feature-race wins. Leerentveld, from Dalby in country Queensland, will be hoping to repeat last season’s form, which saw him manage to successfully defend his Australian Title to achieve back-to-back wins in the last two seasons. Last Saturday night at Westline Speedway, he powered to victory in the South Australian Title.

Leerentveld’s main challenger will be fellow Queenslander Aaron Prosser, who qualified pole for last season’s Australian Title and was running second for the majority of the feature race, before slipping back to fourth and missing out on a podium result. Having had a solid start to the season, with multiple feature-race wins under his belt, Prosser will be looking to make amends when he takes to the track.

Other Queensland nominations include Wayne Donaldson, Klinton Hancey, Brendon Tucker, Chris Were, Chris Crowe, Robert Hardy, Scott Lehfeldt, Sean Rose and Nathan Politch. The latter will be hoping to improve on last season’s result, having suffered an unfortunate DNF in the closing stages of the Australian Title feature race, after qualifying fourth.

Chris Ferguson and Sean Brown will be the lone representatives for New South Wales and Victoria respectively, while Brent Halliday will lead the charge for the Western Australian contingent, which also includes Michael Morgan and Harvey Oliver. All three drivers are set travel over 4,000 kilometres from Broome to Whyalla in search of Australian Title glory.

Pitting himself against the natives, American Jeff Teeters, who owns Leader Chassis with his wife Kelly, will be hoping overthrow his rivals in order to take the Australian Title back to his hometown of North Jackson, Ohio. The pilot of the USA # 1 Leader machine will certainly not be easy to beat, having scored numerous achievements throughout his career in America.

A number of hard-charging drivers from the host state are expected to be likely front-runners, including the likes of last Saturday night’s South Australian Title runner up Danny Prade, Todd Bennett, Brian Chadwick, Cory Hodgson, Graham Knuckey and Ty Forrestal.

Whyalla-based racer Andy Maxwell Jnr., who has experience racing Junior Sedans, Wingless Sprints and Street Stocks, will be looking to turn his local advantage into an Australian Title podium result when he takes to his home track over the long weekend.

Michael Brown

Westline Speedway Club Secretary Michael Brown will also be flying the flag for the South Australian contingent and impressively finished third in last Saturday night’s South Australian Title, along with Brook Alexander, Shane Howard, Scott Webb, Duran Cowland and Sam Martin.

The 2016-17 season Australian Title will be the first major event held in South Australia for Modlites and is sure to offer some thrilling racing over both nights of competition.
