LATE MODELS

Ben Nicastri’s season reached another high last Saturday night, when he successfully defended his South Australian Late Model Title at Adelaide Motorsport Park and collected his second 2016-17 season state title in the process.

Off the back of reclaiming the Victorian Title at Wangaratta City Speedway earlier this year, having previously won the 2015 running of the event, the 24-year-old from western Sydney once again proved his speed from the beginning of the South Australian Title.

Starting his night in a positive fashion by recording the fastest time in hot laps, Nicastri went on to collect a third and second in his heat races; however, a flat right-rear tyre prior to taking the green flag in the pole shuffle ultimately saw him slip back one position from third. Lining up on the outside of the second row for the South Australian Title-deciding feature race, Nicastri maintained his composure, working his way forward to claim the lead on lap 10 and retain his South Australian Title crown, despite losing the use of brakes upon taking control of the lead.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to go back-to-back in the South Australian Title, as it’s the first time in my career that I’ve been able to successfully defend a title,” the NSW # 99 ACM Parts / DIY Parts backed Barry Wright Race Cars machine pilot said.

“This season our team has won both the Victorian and South Australian Titles and that’s been really satisfying, and the team’s focus for the rest of the season over the next fortnight is to defend the NSW Club Championship.

“Our new Barry Wright Race Car machine is going from strength to strength and our team is getting a better handle of the car and our form out on the track is proof of that.”

The weekend prior to the South Australian Title, Nicastri contested the Easter 5000 doubleheader at Mildura’s Timmis Speedway in Victoria over the Easter long weekend, which saw him come away with a runner-up finish in the feature race on the opening night. On the second and final night, he came away with a fifth-place finish in the feature race. He had earlier in the race jumped the cushion and spun out while positioned in second and consequently had to restart at the rear of the field.

Nicastri’s next appearance will be this Saturday night at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, followed by a double feature event at the track on the Saturday night of May 6, which will be Nicastri’s final 2016-17 season hit outs. These two events will also determine the NSW Club Championship honours, and it currently sees Nicastri leading ahead of Ryan Fenech in the point standings.

Nicastri would like to thank his 2016-17 season sponsors: ACM Parts, DIY Parts, CSR Fabrications, Smithfield Diff & Gearbox, and Barry Wright Race Cars. Special thanks: Ross (dad) and Jennifer (mum).
