LATE MODELS

To say the 2016-17 season was a great one for Ben Nicastri would be a huge understatement, having collected a pair of state titles, along with the NSW Late Model Club Championship.

Filling the driver’s seat in his brand-new Barry Wright Race Car, the 24-year-old racer from the south-west of Sydney racked up numerous strong results throughout the season, with his consistent performances rewarding him with a hard-fought victory in the overall NSW Club Championship point score, for which he received his first-place trophy at last Saturday night’s annual presentation night at the Del Rio Riverside Resort in Wisemans Ferry.

Collecting his first feature-race win for 2016-17 season in the Victorian Title at Wangaratta City Speedway back in January, the 2014-15 season state champion found himself back on top, after qualifying in pole position and powering to a convincing win, giving him added confidence for the remainder of the season.

Carrying this confidence into the South Australian Title at Adelaide Motorsport Park in April, Nicastri gave an impressive showing in the face of adversity, successfully defending his title after starting out of position four for the feature race in his NSW # 99 ACM Parts / DIY Parts backed Barry Wright Race Cars machine, despite losing the use of his brakes 10 laps in.

“It’s been a really great season for us, which is definitely in some part due to our solid Cornett engine and the new Barry Wright car, along with the incredible support of my team and our sponsors, particularly ACM Parts,” said the third-generation driver, who was thrilled to reclaim the Club Championship crown, after previously winning it in 2014.

“Winning one state title is great, but being able to win two, along with the Club Championship, is a fantastic feeling looking back over our season.”

Having travelled to the United States previously to crew for his dad, Ross Nicastri, who was awarded Crew Chief of the Year at last Saturday night’s presentation night, Nicastri will be stepping it up this year when he launches his second American racing campaign next month – adding to his maiden racing trip back in 2015.

Basing himself with Devin Moran and his family in Ohio and sporting a striking red and black colour scheme on his race car, Nicastri will be spending a month going up against some of the toughest competition in the country when he competes in the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week, among other shows, and will be hoping to come away with some strong results.

Nicastri would like to thank his 2016-17 season sponsors: ACM Parts, DIY Parts, 3-99 Motorsports, Dirt Defender, AR Bodies, CSR Fabrications, Smithfield Diff & Gearbox, and Barry Wright Race Cars. Special thanks: Ross (dad) and Jennifer (mum).
