JUNIOR SEDANS

Youngster Casey O’Connell couldn’t have been happier to come away with a podium finish in last Saturday night’s Queensland Junior Sedan Title at Maryborough Speedway.

Aiming for a top-five finish heading into the event, the 15-year-old third generation racer exceeded even his own expectations in what was only his second Queensland Title attempt, having qualified on the outside of the front row alongside Ardie Jonic for the 20-lap Queensland Title-deciding feature race, by virtue of a third, a second and a win in his earlier heat races.

It was a great feature-race start for O’Connell, who managed to get the jump on Jonic off the starting line to take the immediate lead, a position he retained for the opening 10 laps, before eventual winner Jonic retaliated with an outside pass. Sitting in second for the next six laps, O’Connell couldn’t quite fend off defending Queensland Champion Casey Collins, who pipped him for the runner-up spot.

Managing to hold on to third place through to the chequered flag, O’Connell was thrilled to complete the Queensland Title podium, in what was his second meeting in his Daihatsu Charade, after undergoing a recent engine upgrade.

“The goal heading into the Queensland Title was to finish somewhere inside the top five, so to score a podium finish is a great feeling,” said the Ipswich, Queensland-based driver, who has just finished his third season in Junior Sedans.

“Both Ardie (Jonic) and Casey (Collins) are two of the country’s best drivers and to be able to mix it with them is a massive confidence booster and it’s also been helped along by my recent engine upgrade.”
