STREET STOCKS

Having previously experienced significant success in a state-based class, siblings and Highway Ford Maitland / John Lodge Water Cartage supported drivers John Lodge Jnr and Kiona Sunerton are certainly proving themselves since recently branching out into the national SSA Street Stock scene.

Off the back of winning last year’s Victorian Title at Portland’s Southern 500 Speedway, Lodge Jnr reached new heights in the 2016-17 season, impressively qualifying on the inside of the second row for the National Title at Kingaroy Speedway in Queensland, and going on to complete the podium in third.

Following his pleasing National Title result, Lodge Jnr qualified into the Queensland Title-deciding feature race at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway, but unfortunately suffered a premature retirement on the opening lap. Continuing to display solid pace the following weekend, he qualified on the outside of the front row for the NSW Title at Gilgandra Speedway, before once again being forced to retire, this time, due to a damaged engine mount.

Making a cameo appearance in Sunerton’s NSW # 13 BA Ford Falcon in the RSA Street Stockers, Lodge Jnr ended his season on a high, winning the final Western Sydney Street Stocker Club Championship round at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway late last month from the rear of the 24-car field, in what was his first visit to the premier track since January.

“Both Kiona and myself are thoroughly enjoying racing on the National scene, which offers a completely different style of competition, allowing us to go up against the best drivers from across the country,” said Lodge Jnr, who has just completed his second season in the national class in his NSW # 28 FG Ford Falcon.

“It’s been a really solid season for the whole family, which is no doubt due to the amazing support we continue to receive. We also have to say huge thanks to our local sponsor, Highway Ford Maitland, for coming on board again to support both of us this season.”

Travelling to Kingaroy Speedway to support her brother at the National Title, Sunerton came away from the event with the aspiration to join him in the national class, quickly making the decision to test herself in one of the upcoming events.

With multiple podium finishes in the state-based class, former NSW Title holder and Sydney Club Champion Sunerton had her first taste of national competition, when she contested the NSW SSA Title at Gilgandra Speedway. She started the night in the best possible fashion, winning her opening heat race, before later in the night failing to finish the feature race.

Recently being offered a guest drive in the Patriot Motorsport Leeton # 11 BF Panels / All About Window Tinting supported FG Ford Falcon, owned by Kat and Reg Corbett, for the SSA Queen of the Mountain event at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway, Sunerton once again showed strong pace from the outset. Qualifying eighth for the feature race, Sunerton went on to end her season in the best possible fashion, claiming a hard-fought victory and being crowned this season’s Queen of the Mountain.

Shifting their focus on the 2017-18 season, Lodge Jnr is looking forward to continuing his campaign on a national scale, while Sunerton will hope to build on her consistency by contesting more SSA national events, along with continuing to chase success in the RSA state-based class. Both Lodge Jnr and Sunerton look forward to branching out into other divisions in the 2017-18 season.

Lodge Jnr and Sunerton would like to thank the Western Sydney Street Stockers club for their support, along with the following 2016-17 season sponsors: Highway Ford - Maitland, John Lodge Water Cartage, Spencer Race Engines, Smooth Suspension, Singleton Exhaust, Adam Holt Industries, Caves Beach Automotive and Dyno, and Farrelly Automotive. Special thanks must go to their parents: John Snr and Joanne.
