It was without a doubt a stellar 2016-17 season for Darren Kane and the Ian Boettcher Race Parts team, who travelled in excess of 15,500 kilometres and split the majority of their time between Super Sedans and Late Models, while also undergoing a short stint in Sprintcars.

Having begun the season with a five-show campaign aboard the Cool Sprintcar, where he showed promise throughout qualifying, while unfortunately not achieving his desired results in the feature races, Kane was a dominant force in Super Sedans and Late Models, impressively winning 13 of his 17 completed race meetings, giving him a winning percentage of 76.5%.

Making only four appearances in his Late Model, Kane proved his versatility, driving to victory in both the NSW and Queensland Titles, which were held at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway and Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway, along with winning his first Late Model feature race of the season at Kingaroy Speedway, scoring a 75% feature-race win rate. Kane’s only other Late Model result was a seventh-place finish in the Australian Championship at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway in February; a solid result, after sustaining damage to the car on the opening night of competition.

Contesting six rounds of the Think Money Queensland Super Sedan Series, of which he won three, Kane was the highest qualifier in each of his contested rounds, despite his feature-race starting position being determined by the random Penrite top-eight grid draw.

Off the back of clean-sweeping the Super Sedan Summer Slam, which was contested over the New Year, with Kane winning each of the four rounds at Gympie’s Mothar Mountain Speedway, Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Hi-Tec Oils Speedway and Kingaroy Speedway, the skilled racer continued his strong title form, going on to win both the National Title and his sixth NSW Title in Super Sedans, bringing his tally to four wins from seven title events. Coming home runner-up in the Queensland and WA Titles at Hi-Tec Oils Speedway and Kalgoorlie International Speedway, Kane achieved a perfect 100% score of placing amongst the top-10 in each of his contested title events.

“It was an incredibly strong season for the whole Ian Boettcher Race Parts team and that’s something we’re definitely hoping to carry into the 2017-18 season, where we’ll once again be focusing on Super Sedans and Late Models,” said Kane, who won 10 of his 16 Super Sedan feature races aboard the Qld # 36 Ian Boettcher Race Parts / Motorsport Fuels backed Dominator, including the John Pyne Classic at Valvoline Raceway back in October.

“Our results throughout the season definitely prove how important qualifying is when it comes to winning feature races, so we’ll be looking to improve on our consistency throughout qualifying next season, in particular at the title events.

“Special thanks go to all of the crew members who worked tirelessly at the track and who helped to transport the car all over the country, along with Ian Boettcher Race Parts, Motorsport Fuels, DRW Racewear and Team Dominator Race Cars. Without them we just wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

While Kane had a few more challenging runs due to a range of mechanical issues and sustaining damage throughout qualifying, he ended the season with a remarkable 29 heat-race wins from 48 (60.4%) in Super Sedans and Late Models, with a top-five feature-race qualification rate of 77.8%, having collected 14 top-five starts in 18 feature races. Kane also finished outside of the top five on just two occasions in 16 completed feature races, giving him a percentage of 87.5%.

Both Kane and his team will be hoping to carry similar momentum into next season, while also aiming to successfully defend their numerous titles. The team also thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that came with Sprintcar racing and are hoping to hit the track again in 2017-18.
