TRACKS

It was an action-packed 2016-17 season finale for Leeton’s Brobenah Raceway on Saturday night, which saw Callum Harper successfully go back to back in the Super Sedan Long Track Classic, supported by LMSC and De Paoli Transport, pocketing $5,500 for his efforts.

While the third generation Tasmanian-based racer put on a masterclass in the Long Track Classic feature race, proving that he knows how to navigate the massive 940-metre track, it was local Wayne Bourke who drove to victory in the Aylett Automotive Production Sedans 1000, collecting a $1,000 payday, with another local in Frank Gordon taking the win in the GOSSA Sedans.

Almost clean sweeping the event, Harper’s performance throughout the heat races, which saw him come away with two wins and a third-place finish from the rear of field, earned him a pole position start for the 25-lap Long Track Classic-deciding feature race.

Immediately taking the lead on the opening lap from the exit of turn two, Harper did not allow himself to be reeled in, pulling away to a comfortable distance and maintaining it for the remainder of the race. While Peter Nicola (Vic) attempted to close the gap to Harper, the newly-crowned Victorian Champion was forced to settle for the runner-up spot. Having previously pipped Harper in the final heat race to take the win, Brad Wicks (Vic) continued his strong form to complete the podium in third.

After recently winning the Rocky Hill Royale at Goulburn Speedway, Bourke continued his strong form in the Production Sedan 1000 feature race, collecting his second feature-race win for the season at the Leeton venue, having previously defended his father’s trophy, the Graham Bourke Memorial, at the track in December. It was a 1-2 finish for the locals, with Bourke leading home Danny Harrison, who was running double duties on the night, while Brett Norman rounded out the top three.

Utilising his track knowledge and proving that the local advantage counts, Frank Gordon was claimed the victory in the GOSA Sedans, with Dave Walton and Clint Henderson crossing the finish line in second and third place respectively.
