30 of NSW’s best Speedcar racers will converge at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway this Saturday night for the George Tatnell Challenge, supported by CEJN Pty Ltd and Diamond Air Conditioning, with the event paying homage to the illustrious career of the late, great George Tatnell.

While Tatnell built a reputation for himself as a leading Sprintcar driver, the versatile and personable racer managed to do the same in the Speedcars class, experiencing great success throughout the 1970s, which included three Australian Speedcar Championships in 1973, ’74 and ’77.

In order to honour Tatnell’s eventful and memorable career, the George Tatnell Challenge, which would feature both Speedcars and Sprintcars, was created in the 2015-16 season. Now in its fourth season, the Challenge has become a staple at Valvoline Raceway and one of the most celebrated events on the Speedcar Association of NSW calendar.

With a $2,000 payout on the line in addition to the pride of winning the event, this Saturday night’s George Tatnell Challenge is sure to produce some close and exciting racing, with Valerie Tatnell (George’s wife) set to present the fantastic trophies, while Valerie and George’s daughters Kelly Wade and Gail Gleeson, and granddaughters Georgia Gleeson and Lorraine Tatnell will also be in attendance

The form driver so far this season, Matt Smith will certainly be one to watch when he takes to the track aboard his dad Steve’s NSW # 13 car. After a pair of feature-victories in recent outings, Smith has winning form and we will surely be putting that into practice come Saturday night.

Veteran Darren Jenkins is also one of favourites heading into the event off the back of clinching the victory in last season’s running of the event, but being joined on track by his brother Troy Jenkins, who also has a wealth of experience, Darren certainly won’t have it all his own way.

Making an impressive start to the 2018-19 season, third-generation racer Matt Jackson already has a feature-race win at Valvoline Raceway to his name and will be looking to add another.

Nathan Smee, a former Australian Champion, won’t be easy to beat aboard the Graham Racing Developments NSW # 14 car, while Bob Jackson and impressive youngster Braydan Willmington are to be likely front-running threats.

Having made the transition from Wingless Sprints into Speedcars this season, Harley Smee will be out to prove himself when he takes to the track with his more experienced counterparts, while Reid Mackay will be making his long-awaited comeback after a massive crash late last season which left him hospitalised with extensive injuries.

The Speedcar Association of NSW would like to thank the sponsors of the George Tatnell Challenge: CEJN Pty Ltd, and Diamond Air Conditioning. Special thanks must go Ken Jenkins, who has been one of the driving forces behind the event, having organised sponsors and the amazing trophies, and also the support from Valvoline Raceway is much appreciated.
